Job Description

You are the person who keeps Mama running smoothly behind the scenes 🛠️💖 — ensuring every space, system, and facility is safe, functional, and ready to deliver unforgettable experiences.
As our Duty Technician, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining the hotel’s facilities, supporting daily operations, and ensuring Mama Shelter Cape Town operates seamlessly. From preventive maintenance to quick solutions, you’ll bring technical expertise, energy, and a hands-on approach to keep the property performing at its best.
Here’s what you’ll be responsible for:
- Technical Excellence 🛠️ Carry out daily maintenance tasks, repairs, and troubleshooting across the hotel, ensuring all facilities and equipment operate efficiently.
- Preventive Maintenance Champion 🔧 Support planned maintenance schedules, inspections, and routine checks to prevent issues and maintain high operational standards.
- Guest Experience Support 💖 Respond quickly to maintenance requests, ensuring guest rooms and public areas are safe, comfortable, and always ready for exceptional experiences.
- Pre-Opening Technical Support 🏨✨ Support the Engineering team during the pre-opening phase with equipment checks, testing, snagging, installations, and ensuring all systems are ready for launch.
- Safety & Compliance Guardian 🛡️ Ensure all maintenance activities follow health, safety, environmental, and hotel standards, maintaining a safe environment for guests and colleagues.
- Problem Solver 🔍 Diagnose technical issues, complete repairs efficiently, and escalate complex matters while keeping operations running smoothly.
- Equipment & Systems Care 💻 Assist with the upkeep of hotel systems, machinery, tools, and operational equipment to ensure reliability and performance.
- Team Collaboration 🤝 Work closely with Engineering, Housekeeping, Front Office, and operational teams to support smooth hotel operations.
- Standards Keeper ✅ Maintain clean, organised work areas and ensure all maintenance activities are completed with attention to detail and professionalism.

Qualifications
MADE FOR YOU… ONLY IF ✨
- You have 2+ years’ experience in a maintenance or engineering role within a hotel, hospitality, commercial, or building environment.
- You have practical knowledge of general maintenance, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and basic mechanical systems.
- You understand the importance of maintaining a safe, efficient, and guest-focused environment in a hospitality setting.
- You are proactive, resourceful, and able to respond quickly to maintenance challenges with a solutions-focused approach.
- You understand health and safety procedures and are committed to maintaining compliance with all workplace standards.
- You communicate effectively, support colleagues, and collaborate across departments to keep operations running smoothly.
- You are dependable, organised, and take pride in maintaining high standards behind the scenes.
YOUR LITTLE EXTRAS 🎯
- Experience supporting a hotel opening or refurbishment project 🏨✨
- Knowledge of hospitality engineering systems and maintenance standards
- Experience with HVAC, electrical systems, plumbing, and building maintenance 🔧
- Exposure to preventive maintenance programmes and engineering systems
- International hospitality experience is a plus ✈️
WORK AUTHORISATION 🌍
- Applicants must already hold valid work rights/work authorisation for South Africa. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Candidates must be legally eligible to work in the country where the role is based.
