Job Description

Position Overview

The Assistant Director of Engineering / Chief Engineer supports the Director of Engineering in leading and managing the day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and sustainable operation of all facilities, systems, and equipment across the resort.

You will play a critical role in facilities management, statutory compliance, health & safety, and operational excellence, while driving team performance, preventive maintenance, and service quality in alignment with Rixos brand standards and all-inclusive resort operations.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Operations & Facilities Management

  • Support the Director of Engineering in overseeing the full Engineering operation across the resort.
  • Supervise and coordinate all Engineering Managers, Chiefs, and technical teams.
  • Ensure optimal performance, safety, and efficiency of all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, water treatment, and life safety systems.
  • Oversee the establishment and execution of preventive maintenance programs for rooms, public areas, and back-of-house facilities.
  • Conduct regular inspections to assess building conditions and recommend repairs, renovations, or upgrades.

Budgeting & Cost Control

  • Assist in managing the Engineering department’s operating and capital expenditure budgets.
  • Control departmental costs while maintaining service quality and asset integrity.
  • Support procurement of equipment, spare parts, tools, and supplies in line with budget and brand standards.

Compliance, Safety & Sustainability

  • Ensure full compliance with Rixos policies, SOPs, and statutory regulations.
  • Enforce compliance with ISO Integrated Management Systems
    (ISO 9001, 14001, 22000, 10002, LQA, Health & Safety, Risk Management).
  • Actively support environmental sustainability initiatives including energy efficiency, water conservation, and pollution prevention.
  • Ensure all emergency systems are functional and that teams are fully trained in emergency response procedures.
  • Coordinate fire safety drills and training with Security and local authorities.

Guest Experience & Service Excellence

  • Handle engineering-related guest complaints professionally and effectively.
  • Support service recovery and ensure minimal disruption to guest experience.
  • Lead by example in guest focus, responsiveness, and service standards.

People Leadership & Development

  • Lead, motivate, and develop the Engineering team to achieve high performance.
  • Foster a positive, fair, and collaborative working environment.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, training, performance evaluation, and disciplinary processes.
  • Ensure regular technical and safety training programs are implemented.
  • Encourage open communication, feedback, and continuous improvement within the team.

Planning, Reporting & Administration

  • Ensure accurate maintenance logs, records, and reports are maintained.
  • Assist in planning long-term maintenance strategies and capital projects.
  • Monitor attendance, leave balances, and manpower planning in coordination with People & Culture.
  • Participate in task force assignments and new hotel openings when required.

Qualifications

  • Education: Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical qualification.
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years in a similar role within a 4–5 star hotel or resort environment.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of hotel engineering systems and facilities operations.
  • Skills:
